NSW – Working with Children Check (WWCC)

Thank you for supporting us in meeting our legal requirements as a not-for-profit, Child Friendly organisation.

As a matter of urgency, always ensure you have a current Working with Children Check (WWCC) approval. Refer to the information below for further assistance.

How to comply with WWCC

The following information will ensure you comply with the Working with Children Check obligations:

What is Working with Children Check?

The Working With Children Check (WWCC) is a legal requirement for anyone who’s over 18 years of age and works or volunteers in child-related work in NSW. It involves a National Police Check (criminal history record check) and a review of reportable workplace misconduct.

The Working With Children Check in NSW is an online system and organisations and sole traders are required to make the link between their workers and volunteers, themselves and the Office of the Children’s Guardian by verifying their workers and volunteers, and by keeping a record that they have done so.

The outcome of a check is either a clearance to work with children or a bar against working with children. If cleared, the check will be valid for 5 years, however applicants are continuously monitored.

If you’re a volunteer, a student on a professional placement, potential adoptive parents or an authorised carer, you won’t need to pay the fee. Sahaja Yogis are regarded as volunteers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I required to obtain a Working with children check?
It is a legal requirement for anyone over 18 years of age for people in NSW who work with children. These laws were introduced to protect children and promote their safety, welfare and wellbeing. Read more here.

Why do I need to register my details on our internal register form?
This form is for our internal record keeping. Employers and sole traders in child-related work have legal obligations around the Working With Children Check, this includes record keeping. You need to make sure you fill in each field on this form correctly otherwise we won’t be able to verify your certificate as required by the Office of the Children’s Guardian. As a consequence won’t be able to work with children.

Why do I need to send my certificate to the NSW Safety Coordinator?
One of their tasks is to verify each WWCC to ensure it’s valid, by sending your certificate it will provide them the necessary information to carry out this obligation. If you don’t send your certificate they won’t know you have obtained it and won’t be able to complete this task.

I have applied for my Working with children check and haven’t received my certificate yet, can I still attend programs?
You may request permission by providing proof that you have recently applied for your WWCC.

How long does it take to obtain a Working with children check?
This is an online system, usually you will get confirmation of your application by email within the same day. Then you will need to go to your nearest Service NSW Office for identification. Please follow the steps provided above to avoid delays.

Fees: The WWCC for volunteers is provided free of charge.
